Job Description
As a Mid-Senior Compositor, you’ll be a key player in the post-production pipeline, responsible for integrating computer-generated imagery (CGI), digital matte paintings and live-action footage into polished, cinematic-quality shots.
The ideal candidate will be someone with a strong creative vision, who is also technically adept, detail-oriented and driven by a deep passion for compositing. Your expertise with Nuke, combined with a collaborative mindset, will be essential as you contribute to complex projects under tight deadlines.
You will work closely with a diverse team of talented artists, visual effects supervisors, producers and technical leads to solve creative challenges and produce work that not only meets but exceeds client expectations. Whether you’re refining a green screen composite or integrating detailed CG environments into live-action plates, your fingerprints will be on every frame.
This is a full-time, studio-based position located in Queensland. However, visa sponsorship and relocation assistance are available for outstanding applicants already residing in Australia and willing to commit to working on-site.
Key Responsibilities
Your daily role will span a wide range of compositing tasks, technical troubleshooting and creative problem-solving. Below are the primary duties associated with this position:
-
Integrating Visual Elements: Combine CG elements, matte paintings, particle simulations and practical footage into cohesive and photorealistic final shots. You’ll be expected to maintain visual continuity and cinematic appeal across a broad range of styles and genres.
-
Troubleshooting & Refinement: Address and resolve both technical and artistic issues that arise during production. Whether adjusting depth of field, correcting lighting inconsistencies or refining edge blends, you’ll ensure that each shot holds up under scrutiny.
-
Team Collaboration: Work hand-in-hand with fellow compositors, CG artists, VFX supervisors, editors and coordinators to align your output with the broader creative vision. Effective communication and the ability to receive and apply feedback are crucial.
-
Deadline Management: Meet or exceed production timelines without compromising quality. You should be able to manage your own time while remaining responsive to shifting priorities and evolving client needs.
-
Pipeline Optimization: Help streamline the compositing pipeline by suggesting improvements, developing efficient workflows and applying scripting or automation (if skilled in Python or other relevant languages).
-
Research and Innovation: Keep up with the latest industry trends, new plugins and evolving tools within the VFX community. You’ll be encouraged to bring fresh techniques and insights to the studio.
Requirements
To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following qualifications and possess relevant experience in a professional post-production environment:
-
Professional Experience: You must have several years of compositing experience in a studio or production house, particularly at the mid-to-senior level. Previous involvement in film, broadcast or commercial post-production is essential.
-
Software Expertise: Advanced proficiency with Nuke is non-negotiable. You should be able to navigate its interface, scripts and node-based workflow with ease and confidence.
-
Creative Problem Solving: Strong ability to tackle creative and technical challenges independently. From color grading to seamless integration of various assets, your eye for composition, color and detail should be second nature.
-
Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with core compositing techniques, including keying (green/blue screen), rotoscoping, tracking, match-moving, relighting and clean-up.
-
Artistic Eye: An in-depth understanding of how lighting, color, shadows, reflections and perspective work together to create visually believable scenes. A strong portfolio demonstrating photorealistic work will be a major advantage.
-
Collaboration and Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Comfort with taking creative direction, implementing feedback and contributing constructively to group discussions.
-
Location: Applicants must currently reside in Queensland or be open to relocating. The studio prioritizes in-person collaboration due to the hands-on nature of the projects.
-
Work Authorization: Australian working rights are preferred. However, for highly skilled and experienced candidates already in Australia, visa sponsorship is available.
Bonus Skills
While not required, the following additional capabilities would make a candidate stand out from the crowd:
-
Multi-Software Experience: Familiarity with other compositing and 3D tools such as After Effects, Fusion, Maya, Houdini or Blender can be beneficial, especially when interfacing with other departments.
-
Scripting and Automation: Knowledge of scripting languages like Python, particularly within the context of automating tasks in Nuke or managing compositing pipelines, will be seen as a valuable asset.
-
Agile Studio Experience: Previous work in a small-to-medium studio environment is advantageous. Being accustomed to wearing multiple hats and navigating quick project turnarounds will help you thrive here.
-
Basic Editorial Understanding: Comfort with editorial workflows, file formats and delivery requirements will help ensure smoother collaboration between compositing and editing teams.
