About the Role: Commissioning Engineer – FGT System

This engineering position plays a pivotal role in ensuring the Flue Gas Treatment (FGT) system of our East Rockingham facility is correctly commissioned, tested and optimized to align with environmental standards. As the Commissioning Engineer, you will be responsible for system evaluations, performance testing, regulatory compliance and overseeing the integration of emission control technologies prior to full-scale operational rollout.

This position is ideal for an experienced engineer who brings both technical expertise and strategic vision to complex commissioning procedures within the energy or waste management sectors.

Key Job Functions and Duties

The successful candidate will take on a wide range of duties, including but not limited to:

Commissioning Planning and Scheduling

  • Develop meticulous commissioning timelines and detailed procedural plans tailored specifically to the FGT system, aligning with the overarching project delivery schedule.

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure key commissioning milestones are achieved on time and within budget.

Functional and System Testing

  • Conduct initial system evaluations including cold and hot commissioning, followed by detailed tuning and system optimization.

  • Validate performance benchmarks related to emissions mitigation, thermal efficiency and fluid/gas management systems.

Emission Control Readiness

  • Oversee the setup, calibration and initial operation of chemical injection and filtration systems used to regulate harmful gases and particulates.

  • Monitor reagent dosing systems to ensure pre-startup compliance with national and international emission standards.

Inspection and Verification

  • Participate in mechanical completion walkthroughs, ensuring all equipment related to the FGT system is installed, functional and compliant.

  • Validate the readiness of the system for commissioning by verifying each sub-component and auxiliary unit.

Auxiliary System Commissioning

  • Lead the setup and testing of secondary systems such as bag filters, scrubbers, dry sorbent injection units and continuous emission monitoring systems (CEMS).

  • Oversee reagent supply chain setup including the integration of lime, activated carbon and other essential dosing agents.

Vendor and Subcontractor Coordination

  • Maintain ongoing communication with OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers), subcontracted technicians and engineering consultants to guarantee seamless commissioning.

  • Facilitate third-party inspections and certifications where applicable.

Troubleshooting and Optimization

  • Quickly diagnose system failures or inefficiencies in dosing, filtration or control operations.

  • Implement effective resolutions, technical modifications and enhancements as needed for improved system performance.

Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance

  • Ensure that all activities related to commissioning are in strict compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards, environmental guidelines and risk management protocols.

  • Conduct safety audits and risk assessments specific to high-pressure, chemical and thermal systems.

Reporting and Documentation

  • Generate detailed, accurate reports documenting commissioning activities, test outcomes and system performance.

  • Prepare handover documentation, system diagrams and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for long-term plant operation teams.

Training and Handover Support

  • Offer technical mentorship and hands-on training to plant operators and maintenance technicians to ensure a seamless transition into continuous plant operations.

  • Conduct knowledge transfer workshops and safety briefings for long-term staff.

Qualifications and Experience Required

To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Engineering – Mechanical, Chemical, Environmental or related disciplines.

  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in commissioning or operating FGT systems or comparable emissions control systems in Waste-to-Energy, incineration or heavy industry plants.

  • At least 5 years of practical, hands-on experience working directly with FGT technologies such as acid gas scrubbing, particulate filtration and NOx reduction.

  • Demonstrated experience overseeing end-to-end FGT system commissioning, including fine-tuning and regulatory verification.

  • Deep technical understanding of equipment such as baghouse filters, chemical dosing systems and automated emission monitoring solutions.

  • Proven ability to coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including OEMs, EPC contractors and consulting engineers, particularly in large-scale infrastructure projects.

  • Expertise in interpreting P&IDs, process flow diagrams and commissioning checklists.

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, capable of diagnosing complex system errors and implementing real-time solutions.

  • Up-to-date knowledge of environmental legislation and industry best practices in pollution control and gas treatment.

  • Familiarity with safety protocols surrounding chemical injection systems and pressure containment units.

  • High level of organizational and documentation skills – experience in preparing commissioning plans, SOPs and compliance reports.

  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities – capable of mentoring junior staff and coordinating across cross-functional departments.

  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience commissioning Hitachi Zosen Inova (HZI)-designed FGT systems.
